iOS versions or “Should I Continue Support of iOS3?”

Supporting iOS3 gets harder and harder every day. Now, when iOS5 is installed on lots of devices and iOS4 still being used, reason for supporting iOS3 is hardly to find. There are no official statistics of iOS versions, so the only way is to get statistics right inside apps.

There a bunch of posts in developers blogs indicating statistics of usage of different iOS versions. All of these stats approve that all developers should stop supporting iOS3 apps for main two reasons:

  1. Amount of iOS3 devices is really tiny;
  2. Users of iOS3 devices are less likely to pay for apps or use paid features.

Here is statistics from Macro Arment (Instapaper app) http://www.marco.org/2011/08/13/instapaper-ios-device-and-version-stats-update. What concerns iOS versions, more than 96% of devices are running iOS4.2. That is huge.

This statistics has similar numbers — 96% of devices are running at least iOS4, what is also confirmed here.

Judging by all of these numbers we can definitely say: iOS3 is dead.

Why Apple iAd Is Really Great?

Apple iAd is a new and revolutionary mobile advertising platform announced during iOS 4 presentation. Jobs said that they love that there are huge apps available for free on the AppStore. Developers of free apps earn their money by running ads. But as Jobs said most advertisement platforms available now sucks. Apple iAd is created to help developers to make some money and keep free apps free.

Apple Game Center

As it already known, Apple announced new social gaming platform – Apple Game Center. It will allow gamers to invite friends, compare themselves to other players, earn achievements and will do automatic matchmaking. Game Center will also help people to discover new apps what is also great both for developers and gamers.

Games category is the largest category in the AppStore and games are dominating overall bestsellers list. There are already over 50 000 games in the AppStore(it’s much more than, for example, on Sony PSP or Nintendo DS). In addition, Apple has really huge army of gamers on iPhones, iPods and now iPads. It seems that Apple has a really good chance to dominate this market and provide its customers with even better experience.

There are already lots of social gaming platforms for iPhone gamers, such as OpenFeint, Plus+ and others. OpenFeint, for example, provides achievements, challenges and leaderboards support and also community tools like chat and forums. In addition there are some tools helping developers to market their apps. OpenFeint is integrated in about 1800 iPhone games.

Some time ago we, at bees4honey, decided to integrate OpenFeint in our games. We started with Jewelcart PRO which now have OpenFeint features support. We are happy to provide our customers with awesome social features. And what is also important for us as iPhone developers – OpenFeint will help devs to integrate with Apple Game Center! So developers can manage their apps from one dashboard.

It’s an awesome step by OpenFeint, perhaps they can keep current developers and users base. But we’ll see later this summer what will happen with Plus+, OpenFeint and other social gaming platforms for iPhone.

There is no much info for developers about Apple Game Center, so it’s better to continue providing our users with awesome experience and wait for more info about Apple Game Center.

In App Purchase vs. Paid App

Pricing strategy for iPhone app is a very important thing which affects revenue. Choosing right pricing model for your iPhone app is quite difficult. It heavily depends on your app and on your potential customers auditory.

In this post we’d like to overview and try to understand in which ways  developer can monetize iPhone app. We will not discuss advertisement models, because we believe that ads fit only specific group of apps. Most of the iPhone apps should not have ads in them, because it distracts user and will not generate much revenue.

So let’s take a deeper look at monetization strategies that presuppose that you are going to sell something on the AppStore. There are no many options to choose:

Open Feint. Game doesn’t appear in catalog.

Recently we created a Jewelcart PRO and embedded OpenFeint features into it. We added global leaderboard and provided OpenFeint with all necessary stuff(screenshots, descriptions, etc.) via OpenFeint developers back-end in order to be placed in OpenFeint games catalog.

Apple approved Jewelcart PRO (iTunes link) and then we submitted Jewelcart PRO for OpenFeint approval…

Improve your app position

It seems that there is a possibility to “hack” your app position a little bit. Apps are ordered alphabetically in “Release Date” list. So if your app starts with ‘A’, then it will be the first in this list gaining a little bit more exposure.

It’s not really good way to increase sales of your app, but it may help on start a little bit.
